- A medication that induces higher concentrations of any enzyme in the blood (either by intention or as a side effect); often, more specifically, w:elevated transaminases, higher concentrations of liver enzymes (principally AST and ALT) in the blood. The latter elevations are usually harmless but may cause problems in some people who have other coexisting risk factors for liver dysfunction (in which case the medication could be a trigger for decompensation). The name ''w:enzyme inducer, enzyme inducer'' is sometimes reserved for drugs that induce enzymes by intention, that is, as w:drug target, drug targets. Not to be confused with an enzyme-inhibiting medication, which can be any medication that inhibits any enzyme (that is, inhibits its production, its function, or both).
